What is FSSC 22000

Increased security in international trade and in parallel to this, the protection of the people against the dangers in food has come up. These agendas raised food-borne concerns in the process.
Food production and supply has created a complexity and security risks in the international chain. This confusion has been a threat to world trade and has increased risks. It aims to manage effective and harmonized food safety systems and to ensure safety and food compliance within every link of the supply chain. After this stage, the International Standards Organization ISO, which ensures global harmonization, came into play. ISO has established food safety management systems that control all the rings in the food chain and its validity and acceptance are inevitable. ISO FSSC 22000 has defined the standard developed for food safety and published for global interests.

Safety and confidence in food safety has fully met this standard. In addition, ISO has developed the Technical Specification ISO TS 22003, which contains requirements for Organizations that provide ISO Food Safety Management Systems Certification. These developments include the chain, reinforced by the growing need for food manufacturers for a generally accepted food safety certification in line with the requirements, and the requirements of various certification programs of retail organizations to subsequent customers. In the light of these information and requirements, the European Food and Beverage Office has started to prepare a technical specification for food safety and good production practices for safe food production. British standards organization BSI has done the necessary studies for this need and published the PAS 220 technical specification. After these studies, they developed a new food safety practice and certification by combining the ISO 22000 food safety standard with the PAS 220 technical specifications. The purpose of this certification is to harmonize methods for certification requirements and food safety systems in the food chain, and to provide a reliable food safety certification comparable in content and scope.

This standard has been adopted by the European Food and Beverage Agency, international harmonization and acceptance studies have been conducted and certification activities have been initiated. Accreditation of certification firms has started and continues for certification.
Since 2011, the European Food Agency has issued PAS 223. The aim of PAS 223 (Food Packaging) was to expand the scope of FSSC 22000 certification with the production of packaging material. Pre-requisite programs and design requirements for food safety are aimed at manufacturing and ensuring food packaging compliance. FSCC 22000 sector has become the necessary technical infrastructure material for PRPs and the major players in the international food sector have become demanding of these applications in these sectors.
