ISO 14064 is an international standard for voluntary verification of greenhouse gas emission reports. Following the emergence of mandatory systems for monitoring, reporting and verifying greenhouse gases, there has been an increasing demand for monitoring and reporting of emissions outside of these systems (often called the organization's carbon footprint). The international standard ISO 14064 has been developed to voluntarily validate such reports in response to organizations' request.
ISO 14064 is prepared in three parts:
- The department details the principles necessary for designing, developing and reporting greenhouse gas inventories at the enterprise level. It includes requirements for the determination of limits, the quantification and elimination of emissions, and the identification of specific company operations or activities for the management of greenhouse gases. The requirements for quality management of greenhouse gases inventory, reporting, internal audits and the organization's responsibilities for verification are also included in this section.
- The chapter focuses on greenhouse gas projects and projects specifically designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase greenhouse gas removal / retention. It also covers the principles and requirements for determining the base scenarios of the projects and the performance of the monitoring, measurement and reporting projects compared to the identified bases. This provides a basis for the assessment and verification of greenhouse gas projects.
- The chapter contains guidelines, requirements and guidance for those evaluating and verifying greenhouse gas information. It assures targeted users by describing processes that the organization's or project's claims on greenhouse gas are complete, accurate, consistent, transparent and free of material contradictions.
