Insulation Resistance Measurement

Simply measure the insulation resistance or the insulation test (sometimes called meger test) by applying the fully rectified DC voltage to the dielectric material and measuring the current through the dielectric material and the ohm's law. is the calculation. The current flowing here is the leakage current and its value is very small. Insulation resistance is expected to be in mega ohm levels. Every insulator passes some electrical current and no insulator is perfect.

While calculating the Insulation Resistance, a constant voltage is applied to the system to be measured and the current is measured. This voltage and current ratio gives us the Insulation Resistance. High results obtained from insulation, or insulation resistance measurements, measurement indicates that the place or equipment is well insulated. The insulation value should not be less than the value obtained by multiplying the applied voltage to a thousand ohms to measure the insulation resistance. If the insulation value is low, it is not possible to mention that the electrical installation is healthy. If the insulation resistance in an electrical installation is below the standards, the system should never be supplied with electricity. In this case, the safety of people's lives and property is endangered. The basic principle is that the sections under electricity in a facility and the sections under non-electricity should be isolated from each other in order to ensure that the facility is reliable and sustainable. In addition, all electrical and electronic equipment must be fully insulated.

Insulation resistance measurement, that is, insulation tests, is based on the application of direct current to an electrically impermeable material and the measurement of the electrical current it passes through. The resistance value is then calculated according to the measured current and voltage values according to Ohm's Law. Insulation tests must be performed on the insulating parts of transformers, cables and electrical devices, on electric motors and generators. The higher the insulation value, the higher the security of the installation. If the insulation value is low, these installations or devices should never be used. Especially if the insulation resistance of the electric motors is low, these motors will overheat and it will not be possible to operate safely. If the motor is continued to be used, the life of the motor will be shortened and may cause electrical accidents. Insulation resistance is measured using Megger devices. To find the insulation resistance of an electric motor, the resistance between the windings of the motor and the ground is measured. If the insulation resistance value is 2 megaohm and lower, the insulation of the motor is very poor. This value is critical between 2-5 megaohm, normal between 5-10 megaohm, good between 10-50 megaohm, very good between 50-100 megaohm and excellent on 100 megaohm.

Our company conducts the insulation resistance measurements in accordance with the relevant regulations, standards and test methods published by domestic and foreign organizations within the framework of electrical safety inspections.

Under normal operating conditions, it is necessary to ensure full isolation of the stressed parts and those parts which are not normally under tension. Regardless, touching the parts that do not carry energy should carry out the insulation tests specified in the standards in order to prevent damage to living things, and all safety precautions should be taken.
It is necessary to measure the insulation resistance and ensure full insulation between the energy circuit and the environment in an electrical circuit. The current-distinguishing substances to be used here must not exceed the permissible leakage current limit.
The resistance of an insulator against electrical current is called insulation resistance. Some precautions should be taken to ensure the safety between vehicles running on electric energy and vehicle body and electric energy.
The electrical circuit must not pose hazards to the environment. Insulators providing safety with the energy circuit must be capable of preventing leakage currents. Insulation resistance measurement should be considered:
• The permissible residual current value in electrical installations is 1 mA.
• When measuring the insulation resistance, the voltage used for the measurement must be at least 1000 V. The higher the voltage, the better the safety devices to be taken.
• You must use a direct current source for the measurement.
• You should measure the insulation resistance under environmental conditions.
