Continuity Measurements

Continuity test is performed to measure the resistance between two conductors. Continuity tests in earthing plants are carried out to check the connections of protection conductors, main and auxiliary busbars. Continuity measurements are also called soil continuity measurements. In short, it is measured whether or not the ground line reaches safely from one point to the other with the appropriate conductor cross-section.

In 2001, one of the subjects that measurement and test works should be carried out in accordance with the Regulation of Grounding in Electrical Installations issued by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is continuity tests. According to the said regulation, it is necessary that the devices required for separating the grounding conductors from each other are located at an easy-to-reach point in order to measure the grounding resistance of the grounding plant. This separation device must be removable using only one tool. The mechanical strength must be strong and the electrical continuity of the grounding system must be ensured. In particular, the grounding system is the most important protection system for electrical installations. When this system is installed and running without error, businesses are safe. This means that the ground conductor must not be physically broken or damaged. Continuity testing is carried out to determine this situation. Our company conducts continuity measurements in accordance with the relevant legal regulations, standards and test methods published by domestic and foreign organizations. In this regard, our company has obtained from Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRCERT), It is accredited in accordance with TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 standard. Electrical continuity must be ensured to protect against chemical, electrochemical and mechanical disturbances. Electrical continuity tests are mandatory before fault loop impedance measurements are made.

In order to ensure continuity in the electrical connections of the protection conductors, the following points are emphasized:

  • The properties of the protection conductors must be protected against mechanical and chemical deterioration and electrodynamic stress.
  • The protective conductor connections must be exposed, visible and accessible for testing.
  • It is not possible to have a switching element on the protection conductor. However, for the tests to be performed, there may be connection points that can be separated by using the instrument.
  • Where electrical monitoring of earth continuity is used, the corresponding coils must not be connected to the protection conductor.
  • The housings of the electrical operating elements must not be used as protective conductors of other electrical operating elements, except where permitted.
