- The first principle is to protect human health. The use of electrical and electronic devices containing the elements and chemicals referred to in the Directive threatens human health because of these substances that interact with the heat emitted from these devices. These substances, for example lead, enter the human body by inhalation or by digestion and create various health problems. Lead, in particular, affects the central nervous system most in the human body. The kidneys and reproductive systems are also destroyed by the toxic effect of lead. Due to overloaded lead, the reaction time of the body is prolonged, there is a feeling of weakness in the fingers, strength of the hands and ankles and frequent memory loss. Other elements and chemicals mentioned in the RoHS directive also threaten human health.
- The second principle is to protect the environment. Due to changing consumption habits, increasing world population and technological developments that cannot be reached to the speed, the amount of waste generated on the world is growing without measure. From this point of view, the waste of electrical and electronic equipment, especially those containing the elements and chemicals mentioned in the directive, is the highest increase in urban waste group worldwide. The annual rate of increase in electronic waste is three times faster than the rate of increase in total waste. In addition to this increase, electrical and electronic waste is of greater importance due to its components. Without proper recovery methods, these wastes present an enormous danger to the environment. In this sense, the RoHS directive limits the use of substances that are harmful to the environment and human health and requires the recovery of electrical and electronic equipment.
