Noise Test and Acoustic Measurements

The issue of acoustics is particularly relevant to sounds, but it also relates to the control of noise-causing vibrations and loud sounds. It is a known fact that harmful loud noises disturb people. The purpose of noise testing and acoustic measurement is to detect harmful sounds that people are uncomfortable to hear. According to the scientific results, the echo of a sound that reaches its ear in about twenty-one seconds of its origin does not disturb people. Noise acoustics, a sub-branch of the subject of acoustics, examines the source of a noise, how it is produced, the control of this noise and the effects of the noise.

Many people are exposed to more and more noise in their homes, working environments, indoor and outdoor areas. Therefore, legal regulations and measures regarding noise gain importance in every country. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) publishes various standards in order to establish a common harmony between the different noise measurement methods used in many different countries. Thanks to the noise level measurement processes carried out in accordance with these standards, manufacturers can develop products that are accepted outside their own countries. There are international standards for such measurements for products such as machinery, automotive, white goods and medical devices. Turcert offers professional services for noise measurement and reporting of many devices within this scope.

Basic Parameters of Sound

  • Sound power, P [Watt] is defined as the measure of sound energy emitted from the source per unit time. Each machine has its own level of sound power, independent of its location.
  • Sound Intensity, I [W / m2] Defined as the vector measure of acoustic energy passing through the unit area.
  • Sound pressure, p [Pa] is defined as a floating pressure caused by sound above static pressure. Indicates the level of noise the user perceives in the ear position.

The parameter used to determine the noise level of machinery and equipment and to compare it with similar machines is defined as the Sound Power parameter. Sound Power parameter is also used in international standards related to the noise levels of machinery and equipment.

Related Acoustic Standards

The sound power level of a tested device can be determined by two methods: “Sound pressure level measurements (ISO 3740 series)” and “Sound level measurements (ISO 9614)”. At both levels, measurements are carried out under the installation and operating conditions described in detail in the sub-norms. The rules for the creation and presentation of a test code draft are defined in the ISO 12001 standard. The norms for the declaration and verification of noise emission values of the machine equipment are specified in the ISO 4871 standard. Basic noise reduction principles in machinery and equipment are handled in ISO 11688 and ISO 11689 standards.

To determine the sound power level for a machine and equipment, specially designed acoustic environments are needed. The resonance chambers and anechoic chambers are used for this type of measurement, as they are the best known and precise acoustical environments for the detection of acoustic behavior.

Resonance chambers are used for the determination of sound power level of machinery and equipment and Anechoic chambers are used in R & D studies to identify the propagation, spectral and directional characteristics of noise that may arise from the subsystems of products. In order to have international recognition of the test and measurement procedures performed in resonance chambers and anechoic chambers, these chambers must be certified by accreditation institutions.

Many people are getting more and more noise in their homes, work environments, indoor and outdoor areas. Therefore, legal regulations and measures on noise gain importance in every country. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) publishes various standards in order to provide a common harmony between the different noise measurement methods used in many different countries. Noise level measurements made in accordance with these standards

Thanks to the manufacturing companies can develop products that are accepted outside their own countries. International standards for such measurements are available for products such as machinery, automotive, white goods and medical devices.

Authorized test and inspection organizations primarily conduct noise assessment of the sound produced by electrical and electronic devices. First of all, it is investigated whether there is a noise problem, the degree to which people are affected and the causes of noise.

Our company performs noise testing and acoustic measurements in accordance with the relevant legal regulations, standards and test methods published by domestic and foreign organizations with a strong staff and technical infrastructure. A few standards considered in these studies are:

  • TS EN 60704-2-1 Acoustic noise - from electrical appliances used in households and similar places - Test code for the determination of airborne noise - Part 2-1: Particular requirements for vacuum cleaners
  • TS EN 60704-2-4 ... Section 2-4: Particular requirements for washing machines and centrifugal spinners
  • TS EN 60704-2-6 ... Part 2-6: Particular requirements for drum dryers
  • TS EN 60704-2-10 ... Part 2-10: Particular rule for electric cooking ovens, ovens, grills, microwave ovens and any combination thereof
  • TS EN 60704-2-11 ... Part 2-11: Particular requirements for electrically operated food preparation devices
  • TS EN 60704-2-13 ... Part 2-13: Particular requirements for hoods and other cooking fume extraction devices
  • TS EN 60704-2-14 Part 2-14: Particular requirements for refrigerators, frozen food storage cabinets and freezers
  • TS EN ISO 1680 Acoustic - Test code for measuring airborne noise from rotary electrical machines
