Cosmetic Testing

The expression of cosmetics has entered our language in French. Its origin is the word cosmos in ancient Greek. This word means order, beautification and ornament. The first encounter of Europeans with cosmetics in today's sense was after the Crusades. The heavy scents used in eastern countries at that time were moved to Europe and the foundations of today's cosmetics concept were laid.

With the Renaissance that took place in the sixteenth century, people's living and culture levels were on the one hand, and the search for new raw materials to ensure the essences were permanent. In this period, with the acquisition of alcohol, it was ensured that the essences were kept constantly. This event is a turning point in the development of the cosmetics industry. In the twentieth century, skin doctors (dermatologists), microbiologists, chemists, pharmacists and cosmetic manufacturers have collaborated to present the most beautiful cosmetic products and today has become a cosmetic science. Today, the cosmetics industry benefits from every innovation developed in the field of medicine, biology and chemistry. Today, the number of raw materials used in the field of cosmetics is around 63 thousand. In our country, 6 thousand kinds of cosmetic raw materials are used.

Cosmetics sector has an important share in the economy of our country. The cosmetics sector, which operates as a sub-branch of the chemical sector, has made significant progress in recent years. Exports to more than 120 countries and tens of thousands of people are employed. Domestic consumption is also increasing. As the number of brands is high, the competition is important. Demographic developments directly affect the demand for these products.

However, it is also a fact that cosmetic products often cause health problems. People are exposed to various toxins and heavy metals in every moment of life. These include daily perfumery agents. Under normal conditions, the body performs its purifying function naturally. However, when the amount of toxins and heavy metals exposed is high, it becomes difficult for the body to dispose of them. In particular, cosmetic products, perfumes and detergents, such as products that enter the body but can not be disposed of harmful substances that damage the human immune system and the body's metabolism and cause various diseases. The effects of these toxins are so strong that they can directly alter the chemical structure of DNA. At that time the body's resistance is beginning to break. Heavy metals deposited in cells are not visible even in most tests and analyzes.

Because of this vital importance, it is important to test and analyze the cosmetic products produced during the production stages.

Scope of Cosmetic Tests

The fact that the cosmetics industry is in such demand but also carries so many health risks, both public and private institutions are also uneasy. Therefore, the Ministry of Health has issued the Cosmetic Regulation.

The objectives of this Regulation are:

  • To ensure that cosmetic products are presented to consumers with accurate and understandable information in a way that will not mislead people and harm their health.
  • To determine the technical characteristics of cosmetic products
  • To regulate the principles for packaging information, declarations and presentation of cosmetic products to consumers
  • To regulate the principles for market surveillance of cosmetic products
  • To regulate the principles for the audits and measures to be taken of cosmetic companies

In preparing this regulation, the following two legal regulations published in the European Union countries were taken into consideration:

  • Council Directive 76 / 768 / EEC
  • Commission Decision 96 / 335 / EC

The selection of cosmetic products, production stages and raw materials and auxiliaries used in production, which are as old as the history of humanity but started to threaten human health due to a number of chemicals used recently, are extremely important. In order to ensure that people can use these products without worry and with confidence, a number of studies are carried out to ensure that the production is of a certain standard. The most important of these studies is the ISO 2007 Cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practice System standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in 22716. This system is based on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards in order to produce reliable and effective cosmetic products. These standards provide guidance on the conditions for the manufacture of food, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and similar products, including cosmetic products.

The ISO 22716 standard is based on a comprehensive Quality Management System approach in the production, testing, packaging and delivery of cosmetic products starting from raw material input to consumers.

The scope of cosmetic tests performed in authorized laboratories is mainly as follows:

  • Physical and chemical analysis, anionic active substance determination, cationic active substance determination, nonionic active substance determination, total active substance determination, salt determination, inorganic salt determination, fluoride determination, heavy metal determination, oil content determination, water content determination, physical examination , pH determination, density determination, viscosity determination, total acidity determination, total alkalinity determination, dry matter determination and protective efficacy tests are performed.
  • Microbiological analyzes included total aerobic mesophilic bacteria count, anaerobic bacteria count, staphylococcus sp count, staphylococcus aureus search, escherichia coli count / search, salmonella sp search, total mold-yeast count, pseudomonas sp count, pseudomonas aeruginida candans tests are conducted.
  • In addition, many dermatological analyzes are performed on skin diseases and treatment.

Cosmetic products are generally defined as products that cleans, nourishes, protects, moisturizes and gives a pleasant smell by acting on the surface of the skin. Legal regulations and published domestic and foreign standards aim to ensure that cosmetic products reach people in a safe, high quality and effective manner. The main raw materials used in the production of cosmetics are: vegetable oils, animal fats, minerals, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, water and powders. In addition, salts of high molecular fatty acids, phosphoric acid esters, antioxidants, solvent providers, fragrances, dyes and pigments are also used in the production. Although it is based on skin health and care, some cosmetic products may have side effects such as allergic effects, photosensitivity and pigmentation.
